The train alone is worth it
Our guide Nuwan knew which side of the carriage would have the best view on the Ella train, and which tea factory still did tastings by hand. Small details, every day. Hotels were lovely, especially the bungalow in Ella.

A guide met us at every station, the ryokan in Takayama was the best night of the holiday and the group of 10 was just right. Expensive, but you can see where the money goes.
We asked for a private trip around our flights and had a full plan the next morning. Nadeesha changed it twice without a fuss, and our driver Nuwan felt like family by the end. Three nights in Baa Atoll to finish was perfect.
I travelled solo and shared a room with another guest, which saved the single supplement. The group of 11 felt like friends by day three. Some drives in Rajasthan were very long; I would add a night in Udaipur.
Paying half up front and the rest after we landed made booking easy. The departure filled a week later, so we were glad we did not wait. Two leopards and a sloth bear in Yala.
Great mix of temples and beach. The cooking class in Chiang Mai and the longtail day around Krabi were the highlights. Our guide spoke excellent French too.
Snorkelling with mantas was unforgettable. Our seaplane was delayed by two hours on arrival, but the team kept us informed on WhatsApp and the resort held dinner for us.
We wanted a slow trip and that is what we got. Mornings in the rice terraces, afternoons by the pool. Our villa in Munduk had the best view I have ever woken up to.
We did the classic route privately with our two teenagers. The kids loved Sigiriya at sunrise and the safari; we loved the food. Every hotel was a good choice.
The walks were beautiful and the bungalows charming, but it rained most afternoons and two walks were shortened. The guide made a real effort to find alternatives.
Ranthambore delivered: a tigress and two cubs on our second drive. The Taj at sunrise was crowded but still magical. Very well organised.
Every hotel had a small surprise for us and the planning was faultless. The water villa at the end was a dream.
The island hopping was fun and the group was friendly. Some beaches near Phi Phi were crowded at midday; our guide got us out early, which helped.
A week of treatments, yoga and quiet. The doctor at the resort was excellent and the food was delicious. Exactly what I needed.
Proper trekking with village homestays. The guide was patient with the slower walkers. Bring good boots.
Timing was perfect for the blossom in Kyoto and at Chureito pagoda. Small group, lovely ryokans, and the train passes were all sorted for us.
We saw a blue whale within an hour of leaving Mirissa. The rest of the tour along the south coast was relaxed and the food was great.
Two nights on our own houseboat and a week of Ayurveda. Everything ran smoothly, and the team called to check on us twice.
