Responsible travel

Travel that leaves places better

Tourism can pay for forests, fair wages and family businesses, or it can wear them down. We try hard to be the first kind.

Here is what we do, what we are still working on, and what you can do on your trip.

Money stays local

Family-run, wherever we can

We choose small hotels, local restaurants and our own guides and drivers, so most of what you pay stays with the people you meet.

  • Boutique and family-run hotels first
  • Lunches in homes and village kitchens
  • No international chains where a good local option exists

Wildlife left wild

Wild animals, seen in the wild

We never sell elephant rides, animal shows or swimming with captive dolphins. On safari we keep our distance and never chase a sighting.

Forest, not offsets

A tree for every trip

Since 2022, 1% of every booking pays a local partner to plant native trees in the Knuckles range, a UNESCO-listed forest in central Sri Lanka. We publish how many each year.

What travellers noticed

★★★★★
We visited elephants only at the Udawalawe transit home, where orphans are raised to go back to the wild. That mattered to us.

Lunch with a family in the Kandy hills was the best meal of the trip, and it went straight to them.

The water refills sound small, but across a group of 12 for ten days it adds up.
